Making A Comic Book Parody
I get a lot of e-mails about how I make my parodies, with the bulk of them consisting of very basic Photoshop questions. So, here is quick little tutorial for newbie Photoshop users.

Common Question:

Do I have to have PhotoShop?

NO. There are lots of programs that can be used to alter scanned comic books. I've seen great parodies made with just MS Paint. However, Photoshop IS the industry standard, so if you have any aspirations for doing working with art as a professional, it's well worth learning.

Where Can I get PhotoShop?

Lots of places. I've seen versions for sale on eBay for very cheap. Sam's Club has a version that's like $150 or something. Ask a friend, they may have a old version they aren't using.

Where can I find the fonts you use for Comic Parodies?

You can get lots of cool comic fonts for free at www.blambot.com

Getting Started:

Clicking on the Color Squares will bring up a Color Palette so you change their colors.
Clicking on the little arrows switches the colors from background to foreground.
Clicking on the tiny black and white squares makes them change to the Black White Default mode

Step 1: Scan your artwork and open it in Photoshop.
Step 2 - Converting the dpi of your scan
If the artwork is not already 72 dpi, then change to using the Image Size Palette. This can be found under the Image Menu
Step 3 - Making a Text Box
Step 4 - Creating a New Layer for your word balloon
Step 5 - Drawing your Thought Balloon
Right Click on the Shape Tool and select the Ellipse Tool.
Then on the new layer you created in the previous step, draw a word balloon behind your text.
If your ellipse is not to your liking, hit Ctl + T to Transform your shape.
Then by grabbing the small squares at each corner, you can adjust the size and shape of your ellipse.
When you are happy with the size and shape hit the enter key.

At this point, all you have to do to finish the thought balloon is draw more tiny circles. You can do this using the same shape tool you used to draw your first balloon shape.

However if you want to make it a speech balloon, they you have one more step.

Making a Speech Balloon
To make the little triangle that designates who said the word balloon, I use the lasso tool.
I draw a triangle shape with this tool...then I fill it with WHITE using the Fill option under the Edit Menu (see below)

A few more word balloons and you are done!
Now get out there and make some parodies! :D
Please feel free to e-mail if you have any questions.
